FIBER BLOWER TECHNICIAN



EMPLOYMENT TYPE :     Full-Time (50+ hours weekly)



JOB SUMMARY:

The Fiber Blowing Technician is responsible for installing fiber optic cable into underground conduit systems using specialized air-blown fiber equipment. This role supports the installation of telecommunications infrastructure including fiber networks for internet, television, and communications services. The technician ensures fiber is installed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications and industry standards.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Operate fiber blowing equipment to install fiber optic cable through conduit systems.
  • Prepare conduit pathways by verifying they are clean, continuous, and free of obstructions.
  • Assist with pulling, feeding, and managing fiber optic cable during installation.
  • Set up and break down fiber blowing equipment, compressors, and associated tools.
  • Monitor fiber installation to ensure proper tension, speed, and integrity of the cable.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting if fiber becomes stuck or installation issues occur.
  • Inspect equipment and tools before and after use to ensure safe operation.
  • Follow safety procedures when working around construction sites, roadways, and utility installations.
  • Communicate with supervisors, drill crews, and other field personnel to coordinate installation activities.
  • Maintain clean and organized job sites.



SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:


Required

  • Ability to operate or learn fiber blowing machines and related equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of fiber optic cable handling and installation techniques.
  • Ability to read construction plans, conduit maps, and installation diagrams.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physical labor.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.


Preferred:

  • Previous experience with fiber optic installation or air-blown fiber systems.
  • Experience working in telecommunications, fiber optic installation, or with underground HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) crews and underground utility installations.
  • OSHA safety training or other construction safety certifications.



WORK ENVIRONMENT:


  • Outdoor construction environments including roadways, job sites, and utility easements.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Work may involve travel between job sites.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and fiber reels.
  • Ability to work in trenches, around drilling equipment, and near active construction.
