HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILL LOCATOR


JOB SUMMARY:

The HDD Locator is responsible for accurately tracking and guiding horizontal directional drilling operations to ensure the safe and precise installation of underground utilities, including gas, sewer, water, electrical, and telecommunications infrastructure. This role plays a critical safety function by preventing utility strikes, maintaining bore accuracy, and ensuring compliance with project plans, safety regulations, and utility standards.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Locating & Bore Guidance

  • Operate electronic locating equipment to track drill head.
  • Communicate real-time bore corrections clearly and continuously to the HDD Driller.
  • Maintain bore alignment per approved profiles, plans, and specifications.


Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and utility-owner requirements.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, utility conflicts, and near-miss incidents immediately.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe job site.


Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain accurate bore logs, locating records, and project documentation when required.
  • Communicate effectively with drill crews, supervisors, inspectors, and utility representatives.


Equipment Care & Support

  • Inspect, maintain, and properly store locating equipment.
  • Troubleshoot locating signal issues and equipment malfunctions.
  • Assist with general HDD crew duties, including site setup and cleanup.
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.



QUALIFICATIONS:


Required

  • Experience locating and supporting installation of gas, sewer, water, electrical, and telecommunications utilities.
  • Understanding of HDD operations and damage-prevention practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility locates, bore profiles, and construction plans.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Must be able to pass background check and drug screening.


Preferred

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience as an HDD Locator or underground utility locator.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with various HDD locating systems and transmitters.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • CDL Class A or ability to obtain.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 50–75 lbs.
  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, bend, and work in trenches or uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Visual and auditory capability to operate equipment and communicate safely on active job sites.



WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Outdoor construction environments with exposure to noise, dust, weather, and heavy equipment.
  • Walk job sites and track bore paths for extended periods.
  • Travel to job sites as required.
  • Overtime, weekends, and on-call work may be required depending on project schedules.
